TAKE A QUICK INVENTORY

By thoughtfully answering the questions below, you'll have a clearer picture of what areas of your operation and facility could use the help of automation. You'll also learn if certain areas need automation immediately, while others are fine for the time being.

Where are your bottlenecks? Does it take too much time to pick orders? Or perhaps your pack stations are maxed out from too many tasks such as manual inputs, labeling, and general processing.
Where are your people? Which operations consume the most labor on a ‘per-order’ basis?
Which high-value inputs could be automated?
What is your current growth trajectory? Today’s peak volume? Overall growth in the past two years? Forecasted daily orders to fulfill this year and next?

HOW MANY ITEMS ARE YOU RECEIVING?

The number of items your facility receives on a daily basis is a great data point to use when determining whether to automate tasks. For example, if you receive 50 packages per day, you probably don’t need to invest in a conveyorized system to receive. We recommend looking into conveyorized automation when your facility is shipping or receiving 500 or more parcels per day. We estimate that the 500-package threshold is when you’ll start to see solid returns from investing in automation.

NUMBER AND SIZE OF ITEMS YOU RECEIVE

Do you receive parcels, pallets, or both? If you receive thousands of parcel-sized items every day, conveyorized solutions are a terrific way to become more efficient. Solutions such as extendible conveyors can remove touch labor and expedite package processing. These conveyors can extend from a trailer to the inside of a warehouse, providing an effective and fast way to unload trucks. When automating warehouse tasks, a dimensioning system is essential to capture accurate product data for both inbound and outbound processes. In turn, your robot will be misguided and either damage or misplace the SKU because it doesn’t fit in the recommended location.

2. SCALES

Most dimensioning systems include a scale as part of the receiving or shipping system. If a scale is not built into the dimensioner, one can be paired with it to provide needed weight data. Weight is a critical data point for most operations handling piece picking. Weight values are also required to provide accurate data for outbound carrier shipping. Choose a scale that can handle the heaviest items you process and that is sensitive enough to provide the weight and required resolution of very light items. You may need multiple scales if your receiving operation includes small parts and large items.

3. PRINT AND APPLY LABELING SYSTEMS

One of the most menial tasks in a warehouse is manual labeling. In automated operations, a print and apply system will print labels and apply them to packages in real time as the conveyor system presents each package. Print and apply labeling is a simple task that when automated can provide immediate returns. It can greatly increase your package throughput and free up laborers to work on more pressing matters.

4. BARCODE SCANNERS

Every package that enters or leaves your facility is going to have some sort of barcode. Barcodes are necessary for inbound and outbound tracking, inventory management, print and apply labeling, sortation, etc. With the amount of barcodes, license plates, and product IDs in use today, every warehouse could benefit from barcode reading technology. With any automation project, automated barcode scanning (with fixed readers) is critical to uniquely identifying items or orders. When you're in the market for a dimensioning system, you should ask providers about three key things–certifications, testing, and system limitations. Asking about these is a great first step toward finding a high-quality dimensioning product. Every dimensioning system has limits and best use cases. Knowing what questions to ask is a good way to make sure you purchase the dimensioner you need. Not just the one a company wants to sell you.

1. CERTIFICATIONS

There are several types of certifications you should ask about when shopping for a dimensioning system. One is a Legal-for-Trade (LFT) certificate. In some areas of the world, an LFT certificate is required to use a dimensioner to directly charge a customer. An LFT certificate is not necessary if you plan on using your dimensioning system for internal purposes such as shipping and warehousing. Along with LFT certifications, asking about safety certifications is always a good idea. Safety certifications are pretty standard for most dimensioning systems nowadays, but it never hurts to ask.

2. TESTING

For a measurement device to function properly and consistently, it must undergo rigorous testing. Producing one correct measurement is much easier than producing hundreds of correct measurements over the course of a day. Extensive testing is essential for hardware and software components before they can go to work in a warehouse.The last thing you want is a dimensioner that can’t consistently and reliably provide correct measurements. Look for a provider that puts a lot of time into testing their technology and can provide documentation to show the unit passed rigorous testing.

3. LIMITATIONS

It’s also important to know that different dimensioners use various technologies to measure items. Each type of technology has its pros and cons, so it's important to ask about them. There currently isn’t a single piece of technology that will effectively measure any item. For example, ultrasound-based systems are not capable of measuring an item such as a foam football. The foam would absorb the sound waves so nothing would bounce back to the sensors to produce the dimensional data. If you’re using a system that uses a type of light technology or laser technology, the items being measured can’t be transparent or highly reflective. Camera-based dimensioners struggle with items wrapped in black plastic. As you speak with potential dimensioning providers, be transparent about the items you need to measure. Ask specifically if a solution they recommend can dimension the types of items you need to measure.

CONCLUSION
